B R E N N A N & K A I T L Y N
Never in my life have I climbed a mountain taller than 12,000 feet (can you tell I'm from Kansas?), much less witnessed a proposal that left me as breathless as Kaitlyn and Brennan's did this past Saturday. Oh, how my heart just overflows with joy for both of them!
When Brennan spoke with me in May about his plan to propose atop a mountain in Colorado, I was in love with the idea and thrilled that he had chosen such a beautiful and meaningful way of asking Kaitlyn, my best friend and roommate of two years, to spend the rest of her life with him. When Brennan proceeded to invite me on the trip planned for late July/early August I was simultaneously jazzed (it's Colorado, how can you not be?!) and honored that he would ask me to be a part of the intimate and momentous occasion.
Fast forward to Saturday, July 30th. Our hiking group consisted of seven, and I couldn't have asked for a better group to hike my first fourteener with. Barely acclimated to the 10,000 foot elevation we were staying at in Leadville (besides CJ, Shellie and Rachel, the three locals in our group), we set out at 5AM to tackle Mount Elbert. By 6AM we were on the trail, ready to climb the 4,430 foot elevation increase and 4.5 miles that separated us from the summit.
Upon arriving at the top around noon, Brennan subtly gave me a thumbs up, asked Kaitlyn if she would like to see the other side of the summit and before I could blink he was down on one knee. It's hard to describe how full your heart feels as you watch your best friend be moved to tears of joy at the though of spending the rest of her life with Brennan. I loved seeing the way that they saw only each other, even with the gorgeous view that came with standing at 14,000 feet. From calling Kaitlyn's parents and Brennan's mom, to John addressing Kaitlyn as a Bookmeyer, that hour that we spent on the summit was precious and full of beautiful moments.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and I think these photos can tell the story better than I can. Enjoy these shares from the sweetest mountaintop proposal.
